Vörösmarty tér

Vörösmarty tér – History

Established in the late 19th century, Vörösmarty tér has been a site for numerous cultural events and gatherings throughout its history. The square has been a traditional venue for markets, fairs, and celebrations, becoming especially renowned for hosting the Budapest Christmas Market, a seasonal highlight that draws crowds from all around.

In 2019, the square underwent a revitalization and beautification project, including the restoration of the statue of poet Mihály Vörösmarty. New trees were planted, and ornamental lighting was installed, enhancing the overall ambiance. As part of the changes, the once centerpiece lion’s fountain was moved to a location near Gerbeaud.

Millennium Underground: Vörösmarty tér is the southern terminus of the M1 yellow Millennium Underground, which links the square with key landmarks such as Andrássy út, Heroes’ Square, and Városliget (City Park).

Gateway to Váci utca: The square is the gateway to Váci utca, a popular shopping strip in Budapest. Here, you’ll find a bustling area with tour vendors, portrait artists, and the Hard Rock Café, which attracts a significant number of visitors.
